FIU Danzon/Charanga Ensemble conducted by Nestor Torres to perform and raise funds for scholarships

WHAT: Latin Grammy Award Winner Nestor Torres will host “Havana Forever: A Cuban Music Love Affair,” as he conducts the FIU Danzon/Charanga Ensemble performing a selection of timeless music from Cuba, as well as Havana inspired original compositions. Throughout the program, Torres will share personal stories about his discovery of music. The concert will raise funds for Israel “Cachao” Lopez Scholarship Fund at the FIU School of Music.

WHO: The FIU Danzon/Charanga Ensemble was established at FIU by visiting guest artist Nestor Torres, and is composed of FIU School of Music students. The ensemble specializes in the performance of the Danzon and Charanga with a mix of strings, piano, bass, Latin percussion, and vocals.

The Israel “Cachao” Lopez Scholarship fund was established in April 2011 to benefit students in the Danzon/Charanga Ensemble. The scholarship fund is named after the late “Cachao,” a mambo pioneer and Grammy Award-winning artist whose work helped popularize Cuban rhythm and culture.
