Try a tri in 2012: Start training for the first FIU Triathlon now

A brand new year is just, what, three short weeks away, so why not get a leg up on that perennial resolution? You know, the one about getting in shape.

Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) Recreation is organizing the first FIU Triathlon, which is scheduled to take place in and around the North Miami campus on Sunday, March 18.

To ensure everyone is well prepared for the swim, bike and run event, organizers have set up the inaugural FIU Triathlon Club Team, which has been meeting weekly on Saturdays at BBC with two coaches.

The club is open to the entire FIU family, as well as the community. Membership is free for FIU students, $15 for everyone else including alumni. (That includes every Saturday from now until meet day, except for holidays.)

“We are really excited about this triathlon,” said Elias Bardawil ’94, ’96, MPA ’05, director of BBC Campus Rec. “This is a great way to engage our FIU community and our neighbors in North Miami, get them onto campus and have some fun.”

To participate in the FIU Triathlon – which will consists of a ¼-mile swim through a section of Biscayne Bay; a 10-mile bike leaving from the Kovens Center at BBC through North Miami toward North Miami Beach and back; and a 3-mile run on the BBC grounds – go to active.com and type “FIU” in the search bar. Registration closes on March 17.

Individual fees are $85 by Jan. 31, $90 by March 1, and $95 on race day for non-US Triathlon members. (Two- or three-person relay teams are welcome to sign on.) Type “Team FIU” when prompted for a discount code at checkout, to receive a $10 discount.
