FIU aims to recruit state’s top students

WHAT:  Florida International University professors, students and administrators are headed to Orlando this week to honor and recruit some of Florida’s brightest high school students at the annual Sunshine State Scholars Program. The state’s top students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and their parents will be courted much like star athletes. This Florida Education Foundation event recognizes their achievements while giving Florida colleges and universities the opportunity to showcase some of their most unique programs in hopes of attracting these top students so that they pursue their degrees in Florida. This increases the likelihood that one day they will join the sunshine state’s job force. The State University System of Florida already is the third-highest producer of four-year STEM degrees of all public university systems in the United States.

WHO: Representatives from FIU’s Department of Physics, College of Engineering and Computing and the International Forensic Research Institute will set up exhibits, including a working model of the Wall of Wind, which simulates hurricane wind conditions.

WHEN:  Friday, February 17, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHERE: Doubletree Hotel, 5780 Major Blvd. Orlando, Florida.
