FIU symposium commemorates 50th anniversary of the end of the Algerian War

The FIU Department of Modern Languages will host an international symposium, The Legacy of the Algerian War: Between History, Memory and Representations, March 22 and 23 in the MARC Pavillion at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

The two-day event is free and open to the public.

A reception and introduction by the film director will precede the screening of the French film, Le puits/El Bi’ at 6 p.m., March 22. The symposium also will host two keynote speakers and a variety of presentations on each day.

The Algerian War was a conflict between France and Algerian independence movements from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria gaining its independence from France. An important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare, maquis fighting, terrorism against civilians, the use of torture and counter-terrorism.

The symposium is co-sponsored by African and African Diaspora Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of History, Middle East Studies, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Women’s Studies Center, the Center for Islamic Studies, Le Cercle Français, the Modern Languages Graduate Student Organization, Pi Delta Phi, the FIU Council for Student Organizations, the Consulate General of France, the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, and the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables.
