Two of FIU’s own among Miami-Dade’s brightest young professionals


FIU was well represented at this year’s HYPE (Helping Young Professionals Engage) Miami® Awards. Cecile Houry, director of student programs for FIU’s Honors College, and Mykaelle Figueiredo, a development officer for the FIU Academic Health Center, were recognized by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce as two of the county’s brightest young professionals.

Figueiredo was named Rookie of the Year and Houry was honored with the Go-Getter award.

Figueiredo’s leadership has helped develop a sustainable support for FIU’s First Generation Scholarship Fund. A unique State matching program, the fund provides support to students who will be the first generation in their families to earn a college degree. Figueiredo, who holds a bachelor’s degree in health services administration from FIU, served as director of Community Relations and later vice president of the Student Government Association when she was a student. During her tenure, she conceptualized a student fundraising initiative that generated more than $315,000 in scholarships in less than three years.

Mykaelle is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration and aspires to
continue her career in the field of development.

Go-Getter award recipient Cecile Houry leads the Honors College's partnership with the City of Sweetwater, which helps improve the quality of life of Sweetwater residents.

Houry has spearheaded FIU’s partnership with the City of Sweetwater. The partnership aims to improve the quality of life of Sweetwater residents while offering FIU students real-world experience. Students are dispersed throughout the community, working in the elementary, senior center and City Hall. She also oversees study abroad programs, career services, special events, and student organizations for the Honors College. Houry teaches an upper-division community service-research seminar, as well as leadership courses for first-year students.A member of the National Collegiate Honors Council’s International Education Committee, she has presented papers at several NCHC conferences.

Houry holds a master’s and doctorate in history from the University of Miami.

Figueiredo, Houry and their fellow award recipients were honored by the Chamber on March 14 at the Four Seasons Miami.
