FIU Downtown on Brickell grows with student demand, new College of Business Administration programs

FIU has signed a lease to expand FIU Downtown on Brickell, nearly doubling its square footage after less than a year of operation to expand programs offered by the College of Business Administration.

“As we expand our footprint downtown, FIU will continue its important role in Miami’s ongoing economic renaissance,” said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “We look forward to educating the next generation of corporate leaders and entrepreneurs in our state-of-the-art facilities.”

The addition of 28,000 square feet at 1101 Brickell Ave. will add two multi-purpose classrooms and a reception space to FIU’s existing 32,000 square feet of classrooms, leadership and faculty offices, and dining space. The expanded areas will open for use in the fall of 2012. Signage with FIU’s name and logo will appear on the building high above Brickell Ave.

“Students have quickly given a strong positive reception to our Brickell location,” Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam said. “As we continue our mission as a resource for the downtown community, the added space will allow us to build our role as a focal point for professionals and executives who want to take their careers to the next level.”

In September 2011, FIU opened FIU Downtown on Brickell after six years at another location downtown. The space was built to FIU’s specifications and displays reproductions from The Wolfsonian-FIU collection. The building, owned by Florida East Coast Realty, was chosen after an exhaustive search to provide a suitable location for a centrally-located space with facilities capable of serving FIU’s rapidly expanding student population.

“As a strong believer in the importance of continued education, I’m extremely pleased that FIU’s downtown programs have been such a wonderful success since opening at 1101 Brickell. The building’s prime position on Brickell is providing many area working professionals a convenient location to further their education,” said Florida East Coast Realty Chairman & President Tibor Hollo.

In addition to existing programs, the new space will house the College of Business Administration’s redesigned Executive MBA program, an immersive educational experience designed to meet the needs of experienced managers. A new program, the Master of Science in Health Information and Management Systems (MSHIMS) will have its start downtown. Current programs at the site are the Professional MBA, Master of Science programs in International Real Estate and Finance, the Healthcare MBA as well as FIU’s Master of Public Administration and Master of Arts in Global Governance. It is also home to the College of Arts and Sciences’ Metropolitan Center.
