Celebrating 10 Years of FIU Law

I spent a good part of the month of September talking to lawyers – FIU lawyers, that is. This year marks the 10 th anniversary of the College of Law and I was honored to play a role in the celebration. The anniversary was an important moment of reflection for FIU. Our university is growing and maturing so quickly, we have to remember to step back and take stock of all we have done.

Videographer Chris Necuze and I recorded the remarkable history of the College of Law for a  mini-documentary that was shown at the college’s Sept. 29 gala.

For this video, we interviewed more than a dozen people, many of whom were early advocates and founders of the law school. They spoke, often with surprising emotion, about the need the law school fills in this community and the great pride they feel in its success. More than one person told me that of all the initiatives they’ve participated in at FIU, they are most proud to have been part of the establishment of the law school.

It is easy to understand why they are so proud. As part of the anniversary,  FIU Magazine Art Director Aileen Sola and I created a commemorative FIU Law magazine. In it, we dedicated 10 pages to stories of law alumni and students. As College of Law Dean Alex Acosta often says, it’s all about the students. We can take pride that we are attracting top-notch students to the law school and in turn, the College of Law is doing a great job educating these future lawyers. The results speak for themselves in the alumni stories.
