FIU basketball part of Miami ‘hoops haven’

National sports media are taking notice of the hoops talent here in South Florida, including Panthers basketball. In a post on Yahoo! Sports that refers to Miami as a “hoops haven,” (the Heat, UM, FIU…need we say more?) FIU receives due props. The piece quotes junior women’s guard Jerica Coley, currently the nation’s Div. I leading scorer with 25.5 points per game. (FIU Athletics recently created a website for Coley in a push to draw national attention to her accomplishments.) Coley, her teammates and a revitalized men’s team are leading the way in a resurgence of FIU basketball.

Both men’s and women’s teams will be in action this weekend in an important double-header on Saturday, Feb. 16, versus conference foe Western Kentucky University. Students always get in free, and for Saturday’s games, so can all FIU faculty and staff and alumni and their families. Women’s tip-off is at 5:30 p.m., the men face off at 7:30 p.m., and free food, drinks and giveaways begin at 4:30 p.m.

Come on out and see for yourself what the rest of the country is talking about.
