The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) is launching the FIU Media Arts Festival (MAF) to promote new visual media by local artists and encourage the development of insightful and provocative visual storytelling

The MAF is the closing event for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (GMCVB) Miami Film Month, designed to highlight Miami’s significant role as an international film destination.

“The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau is very excited to be partnering with Florida International University in support of its inaugural Media Arts Festival,” said William D. Talbert III, president and CEO of the GMCVB. “The film and visual arts industry continues to grow and position itself as one of Greater Miami and the Beaches’ strongest brand pillars. This festival offers an excellent opportunity to highlight local talent, as well as continue to strengthen film culture during Miami Film Month in March.”

Themed “Only in Miami…” the festival will showcase pieces that provide a snapshot of the lively and culturally rich community in Miami. The MAF is free to attend and will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., March 26, 2013 in FIU’s Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS), 420 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

“The Magic City has a vibrant creative community. At SJMC, we are hoping to share the incredible visual media work done in the Greater Miami area at our Media Arts Festival,” said Raul Reis, dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at FIU. “I invite everyone to join us at our Media Arts Festival and learn about the many talented visual storytellers in our city.”
