Wanted: Triathletes, volunteers for FIU 2575 North Miami triathlon Aug. 11

FIU and Miami Tri Events will host the FIU 2575 North Miami triathlon Sunday, Aug. 11, at Biscayne Bay Campus.

This is one of the fastest, flattest and most picturesque courses in Florida. The race will take triathletes on a swim in the calm waters of Biscayne Bay; biking out past the protected mangrove restorations; and running along the FIU Nature Preserve. FIU 2575 North Miami is a qualifying race for the Club Med 2575 Championship taking place at Club Med’s Sandpiper Bay resort in Port St. Lucie, FL.

The 2575 Triathlon Series takes the sport of triathlon to a different level. The number 2575 represents the distance, in kilometers, raced by athletes in a sprint triathlon .75K (.46 mile) swim, 20K (12.4 mile) bike, 5K (3.1 mile) run. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the national governing association of triathletes in America.

FIU students can register and participate in the event free of charge. Their only cost is the required USA Triathlon one-day membership fee for athlete insurance ($12 fee per day). To sign-up, contact Christina Reddick at reddickc@fiu.edu or (305) 919-4549.

Faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend with a $20 savings by using discount code FIUALUMNI when registering on the 2575 North Miami website.

Participants of the 2012 FIU 2575 North Miami triathlon

Miami Tri Events has created two internship positions specifically for FIU students as part of their partnership with the university. In addition, the event will fund the Biscayne Bay Campus Recreation Triathlon Scholarship, a new scholarship fund created to support students who are involved in triathlons. Any student who participates in, volunteers for, or works at the event is eligible to apply for the scholarship, which will be awarded in the spring of 2014.

Organizers are looking for volunteers for the upcoming event. Volunteer for the FIU Triathlon Expo on Aug. 10 or the race on Aug. 11 now. For additional questions, contact Reddick at reddickc@fiu.edu or (305) 919-4549.
