University upgrading FIU Alert system

panther-alert-400x221FIU is in the process of upgrading its emergency notification system known as FIU Alert. In addition to its current capabilities, the system will now send an automated telephone call to every subscriber’s cell phone as well as a message to social media (Facebook and Twitter). This system will be tested during the next two weeks and is scheduled to go live by the end of November 2013.

As part of the testing, subscribers will receive an initial welcome message from FIU Alert.  As required by the telephone carriers, subscribers have the option to opt out of receiving further messages. However, for everyone’s personal safety, the Department of Emergency Management is asking that subscribers not opt out of the system. FIU Alert will only send text messages in the event of an imminent threat to the university community’s safety and for scheduled system tests. Everyone who is not already signed up is encouraged to opt into the FIU Alert system via https://my.fiu.edu/ <https://my.fiu.edu/> . Individuals already signed up are being asked to log in and verify their information. Instructions on how to sign up can be found here.

Questions about FIU Alert can be directed to the Department of Emergency Management at dem@fiu.edu or by phone at 305-348-0670.
