Donna Brazile to headline Women’s Center annual conference

The Women’s Center has announced Donna Brazile will be the keynote speaker at its 8th annual “Women Who Lead” conference. The daylong event is designed to further enhance the leadership development of female students at FIU and connect them with women leaders in their field of interest.

In addition to the keynote speaker, the conference also includes a variety of workshops and panel discussions on the topics of networking, negotiation, resumes and more. Women Who Lead will take place Monday, March 24, at the Biscayne Bay Campus and Tuesday, March 25, at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Free for FIU students, registration is now open for students, faculty, staff and community members.

Donna_Brazile_1Donna Brazile is a well-known author, academic and political strategist who is the vice chair of Voter Registration and Participation at the Democratic National Committee. She was the first African American to direct a major presidential campaign, acting as campaign manager for Al Gore in 2000. Brazile is also a weekly contributor to CNN’s The Situation Room and American Morning, NPR’s Political Corner and ABC News. Her keynote address will cover topics such as leadership, professional development, and mentorship specifically for women.

“Each year this event gets bigger and better,” said Bronwen Bares Pelaez, Women’s Center associate director. “This event has highlighted the tremendous leadership achievements of women in our community in the past and this year is shaping up to provide that to our students and colleagues again. In that regard, Brazile’s leadership and willingness to speak out on behalf of women’s rights sets her apart, making her a role model for our students and colleagues.”

Women Who Lead seeks to provide students with understanding and awareness about the scope of women in leadership today, expose participants to gender equality issues related to career goals, educate students on the diversity of careers available through networking and support female students in developing their personal leadership plan.

“Leadership is about creating positive change, which at times may require tremendous courage,” said Pelaez.

Fittingly, the 2014 themes for the conference are “Lead with Courage” at MMC and “Lead the Change” at BBC.

Pelaez also notes that professors are welcome to utilize the conference for extra credit for their students, or attend the conference together as a class.  The Women’s Center can provide attendance verification for any professor wishing to offer this opportunity to their students.
