An evening with Andy Garcia

Twenty-five FIU students had the opportunity of a lifetime recently as they spent an evening with Andy Garcia, a Cuban American actor and FIU grad. Best known for his roles in The Godfather III and Ocean’s Eleven, the event with Garcia was hosted by Miguel “Mike” Fernandez, who currently serves as Chairman of MBF Healthcare Partners, L.P., a private equity firm located in Coral Gables.

The intimate evening at Fernandez’s home served to inspire students with the two powerful and successful role models, each of whom had hurdles to overcome in their careers. Garcia spoke openly about moving to Los Angeles and working odd jobs in restaurants and warehouses while waiting to be cast in a role. Now an Academy Award nominated actor, Garcia has appeared in dozens of successful Hollywood films in his 30-year career. The lesson, he said, is that perseverance pays off.

Students from the College of Business, College of Architecture + The Arts and MMC Student Government Association President Liane Sippin were in attendance and presented Garcia with gift from the Alumni Association in honor of his work with students.
