All you need to know about parking, traffic this fall

In an effort to prioritize students’ needs and reduce traffic and parking congestion, FIU is implementing several changes to Parking and Transportation on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Engineering Campus beginning Monday, Aug. 25, and running until the end of Friday, Sept. 5, 2014.

TEMPORARY PARKING AREAS & EXPANDED SHUTTLE SERVICE

In order to facilitate traffic movement and parking availability, the university will add more than 2,000 temporary parking spaces for students, faculty and staff on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and an additional 250 temporary parking spaces on the northeast corner of the Engineering Center campus.

In addition to the university’s existing Panther Mover shuttle servicing between the Charles Perry/Primera Casa (PC) building and Panther Garage, Parking and Transportation will add temporary parking, and provide pick-up/drop-off locations at Tamiami Park, Lot 5 by the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center to the PC building.

Employees are strongly encouraged to use the designated temporary parking areas on the outskirts of the main campus during the first few weeks of the semester.

Refer to the chart below for locations and hours of operations.

Existing CATS bus service will continue to provide shuttle services to and from the Engineering Center as scheduled. The Department of Parking and Transportation is providing additional buses to facilitate access when deemed necessary. For the CATS schedule and departing locations, click here.

TRAFFIC CONTROL PLAN

To move traffic in and out of campus as safely and efficiently as possible, there will be extra police officers and public safety technicians directing traffic.

There will also be additional entrances to campus at:

  • SW 107 Ave. and SW 19 St (Fair and Exposition)
  • Coral Way and SW 112 Ave (Tamiami Park)
  • SW 117 Ave. and SW 21 St, just east of the Florida Turnpike

PARKING FOR HOUSING RESIDENTS

Residential students of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus have 291 parking spaces conveniently located at the Parkview Housing garage. The spaces are available for an additional discounted rate of $160 per semester.
