FIU partners with TurboVote to increase voter participation

FIU’s Center for Leadership and Service has signed an agreement with TurboVote to increase student voter registration and participation in elections. TurboVote is a voter engagement tool that reminds users of national and local elections through text and email notifications. Users can also check or update voter registration or request an absentee ballot.

“Being an active citizen means engaging in the democratic process and voter participation is an integral part,” said Beverly Dalrymple, director of Center for Leadership and Service. “TurboVote provides easy access for students to participate and hopefully increasing access will develop a life-long practice of voter participation.”

According to the Higher Education Act of 1992 and 2008, colleges and universities are required to make a good faith effort to provide and disseminate voter registration materials. Many students may not be aware that they have a choice where to register to vote. Students can select to register to vote in their college community if they intend this address to be a legal residence. Alternatively, students may choose to remain registered in their home address if they intend to return there after college. All students are eligible to receive absentee ballots to vote early by mail.

The deadline to register to vote in the November 4 election is Monday, October 6. Visit TurboVote to register to vote or to set up reminders for voting day.
