Forensic science experts present latest research, new technologies


FIU’s International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI) is hosting its annual forensic science symposium Tuesday, May 5, and Wednesday, May 6, in Room 125 of the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs building at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

IMG_4641_FeatureIn its fourth year, the symposium brings together law enforcement agencies, industry and academia to share knowledge and showcase cutting-edge research. FIU faculty and students as well as forensic science professionals will cover topics including predicting physical appearance from DNA, marine and underwater investigations, a new method for explosives detection, screening for designer drugs and rapid detection of “Flakka” – a new highly addictive synthetic amphetamine-like stimulant.

Registration begins Tuesday at 1 p.m. The student poster session and reception begin at 5:30 p.m. Workshops and breakout sessions will take place Wednesday starting at 8 a.m.

Professionals interested in learning more about IFRI’s Professional Science Master in Forensic Science degree will be able to attend an information session and open house immediately following the closing of the symposium Wednesday afternoon.
