The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine officially welcomed its newest class this past week.
At the annual White Coat Ceremony held at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center on Friday, Aug. 7, students who comprise the Class of 2019 received their first white coats and stethoscopes – symbols of what keynote speaker and Associate Dean for Community Engagement Dr. Joe Greer called “the greatest profession.”
Greer, a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient for his work with the homeless and underprivileged gave the new students some pretty tough marching orders, saying they had four years “to save the world.
At 123 students, this is the college’s largest class to date and thanks to a pipeline program dedicated to recruiting talent from within, it boasts 37 FIU grads; that’s the largest number of Panthers to don the white coat in a single class since the College of Medicine accepted its first students in 2009.

Congratulations to all the new medical students! As the sister of a physician (I lived lived with her and helped raise my niece while she was in medical school), I follow with great interest the successes of our College of Medicine. Best wishes for an outstanding medical education and career to all of you.
