Fulbright Program marks 70th anniversary with FIU visit

Cultural exchange. Academic challenges. Professional opportunities. These are just some of the reasons that 370,000 participants have been attracted to the Fulbright Program since its inception in 1946.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government, and for 70 years, it has increased mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Program alumni include 33 current or former heads of state or government, 54 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 29 MacArthur Foundation Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public and nonprofit sectors.

In celebration of its 70th anniversary, President Mark B. Rosenberg welcomed members of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to FIU during International Education Week. Joining the celebration were officials from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, FIU’s Office of Faculty & Global Affairs, and Fulbright alumni from FIU as well as Fulbright scholars and students from abroad whom FIU is currently hosting.

One of the highlights of the visit included an opportunity for students and faculty interested in becoming “Fulbrighters” to attend a presentation and panel discussion featuring a diverse sampling of FIU’s alumni of the program, representing a wide range of disciplines including communications, history, law and music among others.

The U.S. Department of State recognized FIU as a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for 2015-16 and the university’s prospects for 2016-17 look equally promising. FIU is one of 16 research universities with the most faculty and administrators who are Fulbright Scholars.
