President Mark B. Rosenberg sent the following message to the FIU community today.
Dear FIU family:
Tonight our thoughts are with the people of Cuba and the Cuban-American community. The passing of Fidel Castro marks the beginning of the end of a most painful chapter in the lives of Cubans, our neighbors in South Florida and members of our FIU family. We know that today many people in our community and in Cuba are remembering loved ones, including their parents and grandparents, who did not live to see this day.
We join with the Cuban-American community and Cubans on the island in marking this moment in history and hope that this will serve as an opportunity to bring about change in Cuba and usher in a free society.
FIU is proud of the role it has played over the years in serving as a center for scholarship and discussion about Cuba. We will continue to do so as we move forward and make sense of recent events in Cuba. The Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs is taking the lead in planning roundtable discussions related to “The Cuban Transition in the Post Fidel and Donald Trump Era,” focusing on impact locally, internationally and in Cuba. Please stay tuned for more information.
Sincerely,
[…] President Rosenberg on the death of Fidel Castro […]

Well said
I expected a more balanced statement. Sadly, FIU president has decided to recognize the conmemorations of only one segmente of the Cuban nation
This letter reflects an unscholarly, emotional approach to assessing the public service of a political leader. What about the pain created by former US Presidents in Japan, Viet Nam and today in the Middle East? You may have your differences with any political leader and you might disagree with his administration, but I am disappointed when such biased statements are presented on behalf of a university by its president.
YES, as a former Cuban refugee at age 13, arriving in the USA in 1Jan61, from CUBA can attest that immigrants need more help and assistance from FIU than ever before. I am a proud alumni 1975 and 1976. Marine VietNam Vet 1968-1969.
Well said by President Rosenberg, he was just a dictator and under his regimen a lot of innocent people has been murdered, the one that disagree with this fact is because they are blind or they don’t have families that died like in “Remolcador 13 de Marzo” where several children died or killed by the Firing squads just for their thoughts.
