FIU Police lend a helping hand to Monroe County evacuees

On a day when the thermometer hit 92 degrees, cool vibes and ice were served to Monroe County evacuees with the help of FIU Police.

Tropical Shaved Kona Ice and a balloon artist donated goods and services for the Sept. 21 event. Evacuees of all ages enjoyed the free snow cones and balloon art.

FIU Police, led by Chief Alexander Casas, handed out police badge stickers and interacted with evacuees alongside the Red Cross at the E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion shelter. The pet-friendly shelter is currently housing 230 evacuees. Some of the evacuees were overheard asking FIU police what it takes to become an officer.

“This is the truest form of law enforcement where you’re serving the community,” said Officer Zuny Servello. “Not only are you making [the evacuees] feel comfortable during a disaster, you’re making them feel welcomed within the community.”
