Police give all-clear at FIU

On Thursday, Nov. 2, the following message was sent to the university community.

Earlier today, the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) received information that an FIU student had made a threat that would have impacted the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU on Miami Beach. Law enforcement located the student. While the student was being interviewed, an FIU Police dog alerted to possible explosives in the student’s vehicle, located in the FIU Blue Garage on MMC.

The garage was evacuated and an emergency alert was sent out to avoid the area. MDPD Bomb Squad detectives responded and gave an all-clear. Simultaneously, Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD) responded to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and after a search deemed that location safe as well. As a precaution, an evening event at the museum was canceled.

The efficiently coordinated and serious police response by FIUPD, MBPD, MDPD and other law enforcement agencies shows that FIUPD and South Florida law enforcement will exhaust any resources necessary to make sure our FIU community is safe.

We take all threats seriously. The response was quick, thorough, and police determined there was no threat. FIU would like to thank MBPD and the MDPD for their swift, collaborative response.

We thank our FIU community for remaining vigilant and helping keep our university safe. If you see anything or anyone suspicious, please call the FIU Police immediately at:
