FIU students had a chance to both help the extended community after Hurricane Irma as well as gain practical experience in their chosen fields when they helped out alongside professionals working in the campus shelters. Students in the social work, nursing, athletic training and physician assistant programs, among others, used their skills to improve the lives of elderly and special needs evacuees in the aftermath of the storm. Under the direction of the United States Public Health Service, the opportunity proved both an important learning experience and a chance to provide meaningful assistance. Jennifer Restrepo, an associate professor in the department of athletic training, coordinated the students’ involvement with an eye to enriching their educations with hands-on work.
