President Rosenberg delivers Greek life update, shares additional reinstatement decisions

February 28, 2018 at 12:00am

President Mark B. Rosenberg shared the following message with the university community on Feb. 28, 2018:

We continue to work together to strengthen fraternity and sorority life at FIU and align it with who we are as an institution. This is an update to my letter of Monday, Feb. 5, which discussed the process we are undergoing as an institution. Over the past few weeks, additional decisions have been made regarding reinstatements, suspensions, conduct sanctions and housing.

Reinstatement Decisions

During this second round, 16 chapters were eligible for a reinstatement presentation. Of those, 13 were approved to present but one chapter chose to postpone their presentation, leaving 12 chapters presenting to the Fraternity & Sorority Life Reinstatement Committee.

Effective Thursday, March 1, an additional 10 chapters have been approved for reinstatement. Tomorrow they may resume normal activities, including recruitment, philanthropies and social events:

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

  • Lambda Upsilon Lambda
  • Sigma Lambda Beta

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha
  • Alpha Phi Alpha
  • Kappa Alpha Psi

Panhellenic Council (PC)

  • Alpha Chi Omega
  • Alpha Xi Delta

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

  • Delta Upsilon
  • Phi Delta Theta
  • Theta Chi

With the first and second rounds, this totals 26 reinstated fraternities and sororities.

For the chapters that were not reinstated, the pause will continue until the end of the spring semester. Those chapters will then have another opportunity to provide a final presentation during the first week of April. Please note that any chapter that is not reinstated during the final round will no longer be recognized by Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Conduct Updates

At the Greek Town Hall on Feb. 1, I spoke about the five fraternities on interim suspension. We shared that Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) were suspended from the university for a minimum of two years, and that the Office Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (SCCR) was still working on the remaining cases. Those cases have now been closed:

  • On Jan. 22, Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy) was placed on interim suspension for allegedly violating the Greek Life Pause Process. After the investigation, SCCR found Sammy not responsible, and they were removed from interim suspension on February 14. They will be eligible to participate in the reinstatement process this semester.
  • In November, Beta Theta Pi (Beta) was placed on interim suspension for hosting an unregistered party where underage drinking allegedly took place. Additional evidence surfaced while SCCR was investigating these allegations, which extended their case. Beta recently met with the SCCR and took full responsibility for the violations of the FIU Student Code of Conduct. As a result, the organization has been placed on deferred suspension through December 31, 2018. During this time, Beta will not be allowed to hold any social event or parties. After the deferred suspension period has ended, Beta will then be placed on conduct probation through December 31, 2019. Any future violations of the Student Code of Conduct or other University policies could result in more serious sanctions such as suspension or expulsion. They will be eligible to participate in the reinstatement process this semester.
  • As shared in my update last month, Pi Kappa Phi (Pi Kapp) national Headquarters issued a “cease and desist” notice to the chapter in December while SCCR was investigating the alleged violations of the FIU Student Code of Conduct. On February 26, Pi Kapp Headquarters contacted FIU to inform us that they have suspended the chapter for a minimum of two years. As a result, Pi Kapp is no longer a recognized organization at FIU.

With these updates, all pending charges related to fraternities and sororities have officially been closed.

Greek Housing

Given the status of Pi Kappa Phi (Pi Kapp) and Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), access to both fraternity houses has been restricted to current residents, fraternity personnel, and authorized university administration.

Residents of both houses will be allowed to remain until the end of the spring semester. Chapter functions (meetings, events, etc.) are strictly prohibited.

At this time, no decisions have been made regarding the future of the houses.

Reminders

  • The alcohol ban is still in effect until the end of the semester. Alcohol is not permitted for any fraternity or sorority activity – including business, social, and philanthropic events (on or off campus) – until Friday, April 27.
  • I will host a workshop with Greek alumni on Thursday, March 8, from 7- 9 p.m. in the GC Ballrooms. We will discuss the status of individual chapters, community standards and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • The new Student Code of Conduct is open for public comment through Saturday, March 31. We encourage the entire FIU community to review the proposed changes via fiu.edu, and submit feedback to codecomments@fiu.edu.

If you have any questions, please contact Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Lunsford at Lunsford@fiu.edu.
