President addresses tragedy in Broward

February 14, 2018 at 12:00am

On Wednesday, February 14, President Rosenberg sent the following message to the university community.

Dear members of the university community,

Our FIU family is shocked and saddened by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School this afternoon. Senseless violence has struck again — this time in our own community. I have reached out to Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie to offer our condolences and let him know we stand ready to help.

At FIU we have 69 students and 210 alumni who graduated from Stoneman Douglas High and we have already admitted 45 students for the 2018-19 school year. Any of our current students who feel they might need support, should reach out to Counseling and Psychological Services. I know we also have faculty, staff and other members of the FIU family who have loved ones who attend or work at the school. Employees who may need help dealing with this tragedy may contact the Office of Employee Assistance.

Our deepest and sincerest condolences go out to the victims and their families. At a time like this, as we reflect on another instance of senseless violence that has brought an end to so many bright futures, we must come together as a community and remain committed to being beacons of hope.

Please join me in keeping the victims and their families in your thoughts.

Sincerely,
