March Madness at FIU in D.C.


Although most students might kick back and enjoy their relaxing time off during spring break, many of FIU’s top-tier students are flying to Washington, D.C., for a transformational and educational experience made possible by four FIU colleges and FIU in Washington, D.C.

March Madness: Spring Break 2018 will bring five distinct cohort fly-ins. Starting this past weekend, more than 80 students are arriving for intensive, action-packed experiential fly-in focused on potential career paths, advocacy training and engaging with thought leaders on the issues of the day.

President Mark B. Rosenberg and faculty researchers will also be on the Hill this week advocating for federal research funding.  See the agenda below:

  • The Green School’s Jack Gordon Institute’s 36 Intelligence Fellows will be visiting Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Security Agency (NSA), House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and New America.
  • FIU College of Law’s 20 students will be visiting United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Supreme Court, Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Hill Counsel’s Offices and Google.
  • Two cohorts from the FIU Honors College students will be visiting revolve around “Polymaths” in the nation’s capital.
  • Fostering Panther Pride and Light in Closet’s 11 students will be visiting national LGBTQ organizations, Health & Human Services (HHS) leadership, Administration for Children and Families.
  • During March Madness, two of the groups will attend a Politico session with Bill Gates.
  • Also in town from the College of Arts, Sciences and Education will be Jenny Gil, a graduate student in environmental sciences who is working on 3D printing at MBUS of micro-algae. Gil is a semi-finalist for a Fulbright-National Geographic Fellowship and will be in D.C. all week; Sahar Ajabshir, a Ph.D. candidate in nutrition is attending a practicum at the National Cancer Institute.

Some of the program’s collaborators include Brian Fonseca and Hector Cadavid of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy; Associate Dean Angie Fridman of the College of Law; and Ana Ramos and Jose Sirven of the Student Access & Success – Fostering Panther Pride. Joining the cohorts will be Acting Deans Tawia Ansah of College of Law and Juan Carlos Espinosa of the Honors College, and Dean Brian Schriner of the College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts (CARTA).
