Flu season information

FIU is committed to the health and wellness of our students, faculty and staff. To keep our FIU community healthy, we would like to share updated and important information regarding the 2018 flu season.

As you may have heard on the news, we are currently in the middle of what appears to be a severe flu season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health departments are reporting widespread flu virus throughout the U.S.

In order to minimize the impact of the flu on our campus community, we would like to provide you with the following recommendations:

  • It’s not too late to get a flu shot. Students can visit the FIU Student Health Services to receive a free flu vaccine, while supplies last. Faculty and staff can visit FIU Health for their flu vaccine. Please call 305-348-DOCS (3627) for appointment and vaccine information.
  • Practice flu prevention behaviors to stay healthy, including frequent hand washing, covering your mouth, staying hydrated, and boosting your immune system by eating fruit and/or vegetables high in vitamin C.
  • Know the symptoms of flu. Individuals with the flu usually experience fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Consult your health care provider if you experience flu-like symptoms. Remember that both Student Health Services and FIU Health are on campus for your care and convenience.
  • If you become infected, reduce your contact with others to minimize the chance of passing on the infection. You can do this by staying home and avoiding common areas shared with roommates, friends, or family members. Finding a support system to help you with meals and other necessities is highly recommended. If you live on campus, we encourage you to inform your resident assistant that you are ill so that they may assist you, if necessary.
  • Immediately communicate with your supervisor and/or professors by phone or email to inform them of your condition and to determine the best way to keep up with your work.
  • Do not return to your regular activities, such as attending work or class, until you have gone for 24 hours with a temperature below 100.4 °F (38° C) without the use of fever-lowering medications. Since symptoms may vary from person to person, if you suspect your symptoms are flu-like, but experienced no fever, use your best judgment when resuming normal activities for your safety and protection of others.

We hope that these tips are helpful and will assist you during this 2018 flu season. For more information about what you can do to minimize the spread of flu and stay healthy, please visit go.fiu.edu/flu2018.
