May in photos: Commencement, orientation and the No. 1 spot

It was a big month for our students, the lifeblood of the university. While thousands of Panthers heard their names called at commencement, brand-new students made their first FIU connections at orientation. FIU’s Model UN team also turned in a historic achievement. Here are some of our favorite moments from May, as captured by FIU photographers Margi Rentis, Doug Garland, Carl-Frederick Francois, Eduardo Merille and Kat de Jesus.

On the first day of the month, the university recognized nine female Worlds Ahead graduates in engineering. Photo by Margi Rentis.

Saif Y. Ishoof, vice president of the Office of Engagement, is always out in the community greeting people with a huge smile. It’s pictures like this (taken with panelists at Tostada Tuesday this month) that have members of the university community hailing him as “The Selfie King.” From left: Lucas Hernandez, guest speaker from Microsoft; Amy Austin Renshaw, co-founder/CEO of Code/Art; Erika Twani, co-founder of Learning One to One; Andres Campo, founder/CEO of Axxis Solutions; Susan Germer, co-founder of Playposit; Joseph Riquelme, assistant vice president for FIU Online; and President Mark B.
