On Wednesday, Jan. 9, President Mark B. Rosenberg sent the following message to the university community.

Today is a proud day for our FIU – and a historic moment for our state!

This morning at Miami’s Freedom Tower, Governor DeSantis named FIU alumna Barbara Lagoa to the Florida Supreme Court. She is the first Hispanic woman and FIU graduate to serve in this prestigious position.

Judge Lagoa received her bachelor’s degree in English from FIU and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She went on to receive her Juris Doctor from Columbia University, where she also served as an associate editor of the Columbia Law Review. In 2006, she became the first Cuban American woman to be appointed to Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal.

We know that Judge Lagoa’s strong commitment to the law and her many of years of experience will be a tremendous asset to our state’s highest court.

Please join me in congratulating Judge Lagoa on this outstanding achievement!
