International medical association recognizes Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine

The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) has once again recognized the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s (HWCOM) unique approach to medical education, which focuses on social accountability and the social determinants of health.

HWCOM is the first recipient of AMEE’s ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award for Inspirational Approaches to Health Professions Education. In 2016, HWCOM received the ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award in Social Accountability.

“The curriculum at HWCOM provides the next generation of healers with the knowledge necessary to address the impacts of the social determinants of health on the life of the individual patient, and, moreover, the well-being of the greater community. I am extremely proud that our faculty and staff have taken a leadership position in preparing our students for this critical part of medical care,” said Dr. Robert Sackstein, dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and FIU’s senior vice president for health affairs.

AMEE, the leading medical association for medical schools with 90 members on five continents, promotes international excellence in education in the healthcare professions across the continuum of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education. The ASPIRE program recognizes excellence in education in a medical, dental or veterinary school.

The award ceremony was held at the AMEE 2019 Conference in Vienna, Austria.
