Name: Daniel Sixto

Major: International relations and history

Where did you intern? Best Delegate Model United Nations in Boston, Massachusetts

What did you do there? I served as a residential counselor, helping coordinate activities for high school students at Harvard Law School and Boston University that facilitate the learning of international relations, security studies, diplomacy and leadership.

How did you get your internship? A former FIU student in the Model UN program referred me to the program; so I flew out to Boston and got to work!

What projects did you work on? At the internship, I made sure to work on various projects—from helping coordinate diplomacy simulations that put students in situations where they needed to solve international crises to leading a basketball game after class.

What was the coolest thing that happened during your internship? One of the coolest things about my internship was the amazing students I was able to work with. They all came from different backgrounds and regions of the world; it was an exciting experience for them to meet all sorts of new people and for me to help them grow as future leaders.

What did you like most about your experience? I loved being able to see the results of my experience right in front of me. From a student's eyes lighting up when they came up with a great idea that they want to advocate for to the friendships that they made over the weeks.

What did you learn about yourself? I learned I want to be able to branch out and try different things before I graduate. It will help me grow as a person and plan for life after graduation.

How did you expand your professional network? I 've met plenty of other students and professionals from across the country— from Georgetown University, Harvard and Elon University. I hope I will have the chance to see them again soon. They not only taught me leadership skills that I may use in the future, but pushed me to always move forward.

How does your internship connect back to your coursework? I plan on conducting research through ARCH while in the Honors College on foreign policy and political science. The simulations I was a part of here made me hone in on what topics I want to study while at FIU.

How did it help you prove yourself in the “real world”? This was the first time where I've gone out and done something that I had little experience with, but what I got out of it went beyond that. I learned to manage my time while balancing two classes with the internship, dedicate myself to what I love doing, and be able to put all doubts aside and just go for it! I wouldn't trade this experience for the world, and it was easily one of the best adventures I had all summer.

What advice do you have for those beginning the internship process? Just go for it! Different companies are always looking for extra help, and the biggest obstacle you might face is one that you make for yourself.
