My internship at an investment fund

Where are you interning? Mathon Investments Corporation, a privately owned and operated investment fund with a major emphasis on South Florida Real Estate.

What do you do there?  I have the responsibility of comparing and analyzing account information, maintaining files, documenting financial transactions and providing weekly and monthly reports. 

How did you get your internship? I found my internship through a temp agency called "Ascendo Resources." 

What projects do you work on? I am responsible for organizing the purchase of county tax certificates within the 67 Florida counties. I am also working on reconciling accounts for current and previous tax years as well as researching bankruptcies associated with the tax certificates purchased in 2019 and prior. Another project that requires my attention is the processing of monthly mortgage payments made by our clients. 

What is the coolest thing that has happened during your internship? The coolest thing that has happened during my time working with Mathon Investments Corp. has been the opportunity to work on large financial and analytical projects that require extensive knowledge in accounting and finance. 

What do you like most about your experience? The factors that have made my experience enjoyable is being able to network with educated individuals who are passionate about accounting and finance and who are willing to teach a younger generation the ethical ways of conducting business. 

What have you learned about yourself? I have learned that I am able to efficiently work on multiple projects with precision and detail in a short period of time. I have also learned that I have the analytical skills to produce new ideas to make the process of my work simpler in order to produce reliable and comparable information. 

How have you expanded your professional network? I expanded my professional network by working with educated business professionals that have studied economics, accounting and finance. I have also been able to meet with other private business owners and analyze better ways to efficiently expand the company's business. 

How does your internship connect back to your coursework? My internship with Mathon Investments Corp. connects back to my Honors College coursework by expanding my knowledge in the business and accounting industry and by putting my skills learned from the Honors College into practice. 

How has it help you prove yourself in the “real world”? This position helped improve my network base and expand my knowledge in order to pursue a position in the accounting field. 

What advice do you have for those beginning the internship process? Take advantage of the opportunities given to you and view all projects as ways to advance your knowledge for your future career.
