Stempel dean recognized by NBC as Top 20 Hispanic for Hispanic Heritage Month

Tomás R. Guilarte, professor and dean of Stempel College, has been selected as one of NBCNews.com and NBC Latino’s top Hispanics for 2019.  

Recognized worldwide for revealing the effects of developmental lead exposure on the central nervous systems and reversing such effects using behavioral interventions, Guilarte has also been a pioneer in validating and promoting the use of a biomarker of neuroinflammation that is now used in many research centers and clinics throughout the world to study diverse neurological conditions. 

Guilarte was born in Oriente, Cuba, and his family arrived to the United States in 1967 to build a new life in Miami.

“It has been extremely rewarding to be back in Miami, the community that welcomed me when I arrived to this great country as a young child,” Guilarte said. “I am thrilled to be at FIU to advance our vision and goals to increase research, educate our students and to promote healthy living in the community we serve.”

Guilarte received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Florida, followed by his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he was faculty in the department of Environmental Health Sciences for 30 years. In 2010, he was appointed inaugural Leon Hess professor and chairman of the department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in the City of New York. He then became dean and professor at Stempel College in January 2016, where he has exponentially grown the research enterprise, increased the number of students and educational offerings including a fully on line MPH. He has also advanced international collaborations and course certificates with several universities from South America.  

“Today, I recognize the need for successful scientists and academicians to be role models for Hispanics, while working to solve problems that our communities face,” Guilarte continued. “I love FIU and I love Miami!”

The NBC Latino 20 showcases a diverse group of Hispanics — from celebrities and young activists to scientists and legal advocates — who are making a difference. This year, the list also includes pop sensation Ricky Martin and CEO of United Airlines Oscar Munoz.
