The university's summer camps are going online as the FIU community continues to observe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out the options below.

College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts 

Miami Beach Urban Studios - Virtual Growlight Breakthrough camp

FIU and the academic-enrichment program Breakthrough Miami are providing a virtual STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program focused on 3D modeling and designing for people with disabilities in personal and urban settings.

Now in its fifth year, Growlight 2020 will take place from June 15 - July 10. Embarking high school students on a four-week journey of real-time, hands-on design projects, Growlight provides meaningful opportunities for students to immediately apply new knowledge in design software and 3D printing, communication and leadership skills to solve local and global challenges.

FIU Theatre

Join FIU this summer for a fun experience that will awaken your child’s imagination and give them confidence in their creativity. FIU Theatre is offering virtual camps that will teach your child about acting and writing, theatre design and technology and musical theatre performance. 

The theatre design and technology camp runs June 15 - 26. Musical theatre camp runs June 15 – July 15. The acting and writing camp runs July 13 - 24.

FIU Communication - SCI Science Communication Summer Program

The Steven Cruz Institute for Science, Media + Technology will be hosting a Science Communication Summer Program for high school students. This summer program is an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience before applying to college. They will interact with science communication experts, increase their science communication skills and create and present their own science communication projects.

Designed for 9th-12th graders interested in STEM fields, communication, and/or the rising field of science communication, program topics include visualizing science, science writing, identifying credible sources, public speaking and talking about science on social media. The two-week long program will run from July 13 to July 24, Monday through Friday, with two two-hour long Zoom sessions from 10 a.m. - noon and 2-4 p.m. every day. Students will work closely with program mentors who will facilitate activities and be available for support and questions throughout all program sessions.

Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs

National Security Studies Summer Institute

In this virtual camp, students have the unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of national security, engage current and former intelligence professionals, and experience—via interactive crisis simulations—the careers that keep America safe. The Summer Institute is a limited-selection-based program, open to all high school students in good academic standing.

The camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from July 13-17. The program is free is $195. For more information, check out the camp's website.

College of Engineering & Computing

ENLACE summer camp

Middle schoolers are welcome to join the College of Engineering & Computing for its 2020 ENLACE camp, a virtual camp that will prepare participants for STEM fields. Held Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. on June 15 - July 24, the camp invites students to learn about STEM, technology, college prep, math, chess, social emotional learning, fitness and nutrition. The camp is funded by The Children's Trust and has a one-time registration fee.

Camp Inspire

Children ages 6-12 are invited to participate in activities, labs, virtual field trips and games with Camp Inspire. Each week, the camp covers a different theme related to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), such as 'Land to Sea to Me' and 'Science Superheroes.' 

Weekly rates begin at $75 for employees. Camps run Monday to Friday through July. For more information, check out the camp's website.

Virtual Forensic Science/CSI Camp

For students ages 13-18 who love reading mysteries and watching crime scene shows on TV, this summer is the time to become an investigator. Campers will learn from forensic science and crime scene experts, produce crime scene records, latent fingerprints, DNA, bloodstains and much more from homemade CSI kits.

The cost is $50 per half-day camp session; two to three sessions for $40 each; or 4-9 sessions $30 each. The camp runs from August 3-7. For more information, check out the camp's website.

Virtual Reading Tutoring

Children in grades 2-6 who may need extra support building their reading skills are welcome to participate in Virtual Reading Tutoring this summer. Tutoring includes an assessment of the student's reading comprehension, an individualized literacy plan to meet the student's needs and more. Lessons cost $80/week (two lessons) or $60/week for three weeks (six lessons). Center for Children and Families

Summer Treatment Program: A comprehensive free summer camp program for children ages 5-12 with ADHD and related behavioral, emotional and learning challenges. Parents will receive individual weekly parent training sessions, and children will receive three weekly one-hour sessions that focus on social skills development, anger management and more. The program begins June 15 and it will run for 8 weeks. Interested parents can call 786-453-7865 for more information.
