Coronavirus update: FIU moves to remote instruction starting Thursday, March 12

Update 15 -- A message from President Mark B. Rosenberg

March 11, 2020 at 5:15pm

Dear members of the university community,

Today, Florida’s State University System is transitioning to remote learning in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In an abundance of caution, and following the lead of Governor Ron DeSantis, at FIU we are responding by beginning remote learning this Thursday.

Remote instruction for all classes will occur through at least Saturday, April 4. Please stay alert to updates, since this date could change.

This decision was made with the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and the community in mind. We are asking that everyone be flexible as we are updating the community as quickly as possible. It is important to note that there is no confirmed coronavirus case in the FIU community.

The transition to remote learning will require everyone’s cooperation and patience.

Faculty will have professional support for the transition and will communicate with their students about arrangements for remote learning.

On-campus residents who are able to go home are encouraged to do so immediately. Students who need to remain on campus will be allowed to stay during this period.

FIU will remain fully operational. Faculty and staff, including academic advisors, are expected to report to work, as scheduled. Student employees should check with their supervisors.

The FIU libraries will remain open and students are welcome to use the facilities under some protocols.

The recreation centers will keep the regular schedule through this weekend. Please check the website for the schedule going forward.

For dining services hours please visit the Shop FIU web site.

Clinical sites -- ACC, Broward, student health clinics (MMC and BBC) -- will remain on their regular schedules. After hours on call will also remain operational.

Athletic competitions will continue as scheduled until further notice.

On campus dual enrollment students will transition to remote learning. MAST@FIU will follow the guidance of Miami-Dade Public Schools.

FIU events scheduled through April 4 are canceled. This applies to on and off campus events.

As mentioned in a previous message, all summer study abroad programs and non-essential travel has been canceled as well.

For updates and additional information, please visit the FIU coronavirus web page. The State University System announcement is available online.

Students with concerns may contact FIU Student Health Services at 305-348-2401. Faculty, staff and other members of the community may contact FIU Health at 305-348-3627(DOCS).

The FIU Call Center will be open on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you have questions, please call 305-348-3481 during those hours.

Thank you.
