Travel grants available to study most comprehensive collection of Cuban, Latin American music in U.S.

Do you know a scholar conducting research on Latin American music and its influence?

Whether international or stateside, the call is out. Applications for Díaz-Ayala travel grants are open until March 16.

Widely regarded as the most expansive and comprehensive publicly accessible archive of Latin American music, the Díaz-Ayala Collection of Cuban and Popular Latin American Music is managed by the FIU Libraries' Sound and Image department and housed at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus in the Steven and Dorothea Green Library.

Containing approximately 150,000 items and continuously diversifying and multiplying, the archive includes: LPS, cassettes, sheet music, radio interviews, books and much more.

Every year, the collection partners, which include the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) and the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), sponsor grants up to $2,000 to offset the costs of a five-day stint in Miami to access the complete archive.

Once awarded, travel grant recipients are required to:

• Give a lunchtime lecture about their research project
• Write a one page, single-space project summary 
• Acknowledge FIU Libraries, CRI, LACC and the U.S. Department of Education Title VI Grant for any publications resulting from the use of the collection.
