Update No. 12

March 7, 2020 at 12:06pm

State of Florida health officials have announced that two people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Broward County. These are the first cases in South Florida.

To date, no member of the FIU community has tested positive for the coronavirus. Our top concern is the safety of our students, faculty and staff as well as our community. We are working with our partners in Broward to ensure all recommended safeguards are in place.

At this time university operations are normal. Please visit the FIU coronavirus web page for updates and information regarding FIU guidelines and other resources.

Prevention information is being posted in high traffic areas and additional hand sanitizing stations have been added throughout campus. For more details on how to stay healthy, please visit our coronavirus frequently asked questions page.

As you know, the number of cases in the U.S. has grown significantly over the past week and is expected to continue increasing as the test becomes more widely available.

Events

Please note that this year’s Torch Awards gala, scheduled for March 28 is being postponed. The decision was made out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with sponsors, keeping the comfort and wellbeing of guests in mind. A new date will be announced soon.

Likewise, other upcoming events are being evaluated keeping in mind health experts’ recommendation for social distancing. Large local events such as Ultra, Calle Ocho and eMerge Americas have been canceled as well.

We have asked every member of the university community who is planning an event that will take place on or off campus through June 30, 2020 to fill out this short form with some basic event details. This information will be used to make decisions in consultation with event organizers. If you have not submitted your upcoming event, please do so immediately. We request that all events be documented no later than noon on Tuesday, March 10.
