Coronavirus update: Commencement ticket sales paused, events through April 4 postponed or canceled, FIU remains fully operational

On March 13, the following message was shared with the university community by External Relations, Strategic Communications and Marketing.

Dear members of the university community,

It is important to note that there is no confirmed coronavirus case in the FIU community.

On Thursday, FIU began remote learning in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Remote instruction for all classes will occur through at least Saturday, April 4. Please stay alert to updates at FIU’s coronavirus website, since this date could change.

The university, along with the other State University System institutions, made this decision in an abundance of caution and following the lead of Governor Ron DeSantis. Also today, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency.

At FIU, our priority is the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and the community. We thank everyone for your flexibility, cooperation and patience during this challenging time.

FIU remains fully operational. Please stay tuned for additional updates throughout the weekend.

The university is lifting the deadline to withdraw from the Spring Term (Session B and C) with a DR grade temporarily. During this time, we encourage you to discuss any potential changes to your spring enrollment with your advisor.

Students living on campus have been encouraged to return home by noon on Sunday, March 15. Students who choose to remain on campus can do so.

The recreation centersincluding Panther Hall Pool, will keep the regular schedule through this weekend. Please check the website for the schedule going forward. 

The FIU libraries will remain open and students are welcome to use the facilities.

All three museums at FIU are closed to the public until at least April 4.

The Children’s Creative Learning Center is closed as of Monday, following Miami-Dade County Public Schools closures.

Clinical sites -- ACC, Broward, student health clinics (MMC and BBC) -- will remain on their regular schedules. After hours on call will also remain operational.

Conference USA and all FIU intercollegiate games have been suspended until further notice. Fans who previously purchased game tickets for scheduled athletic events will receive an email from the FIU Athletics Ticket Office with more information about refunds. All practices have also been suspended until further notice.

On campus dual enrollment students will transition to remote learning. MAST@FIU is closed as of Monday, following Miami-Dade County Public Schools closures.

All FIU events scheduled through April 4 are postponed or canceled. This applies to on and off campus events.

At this time, Spring 2020 Commencement ticket sales have been paused, to allow our community to focus on attending to the immediate needs at hand. We will re-post information on Spring 2020 commencement when we have greater clarity.

Match Day at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has been canceled.

As mentioned in a previous message, all summer study abroad programs and non-essential travel has been canceled as well.
