Coronavirus update: Summer B will be remote, emergency grant applications now available

Update No. 29

April 24, 2020 at 7:07pm

  • Summer B will be remote
  • CARES Act emergency grant applications now available
  • Face to face events canceled through at least July 1

We hope you had a good finals week and are ready for the summer. Below please find important information.

Summer B and Fall 2020 Classes

To ensure that students are able to continue making academic progress, all fully online classes in Summer B, beginning on June 22, will continue as previously scheduled while Summer B face-to-face lecture classes and labs will be offered remotely.

A limited number of workshops for in-person labs may be offered in Summer B if “Safer at Home” orders are lifted, and appropriate social distancing guidelines allow them to be operated safely. If operationalized, additional information on these special offerings will be provided in late June.

Decisions on Fall 2020 classes will be made in the coming weeks.

CARES Act grant applications now available

FIU students whose lives and education have been affected by the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus pandemic are now able to apply for emergency cash grants. The emergency grants will be funded by the federal government through a $19 million Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act allocation FIU has received for student financial aid.

The aid will be awarded based on demonstrated need and will provide funds for students to use towards eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance, including food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and childcare. Students also must meet the following criteria:

  • Are currently enrolled in a degree program
  • Have filed a 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you have not completed a FAFSA, you still have time.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Do not owe a refund for any federal student aid and are not in default on federal student loans
  • Are a U.S. citizen or other Title IV eligible noncitizen

The application is now available at go.fiu.edu/eaidrequest.

Students who have previously submitted the emergency aid grant application through FIUstrong have been contacted for additional information so that their requests can be processed. Student aid may include multiple sources of funding.

Students who need assistance but do not meet the requirements for CARES Act funding may request aid by completing the same emergency aid request form available in the student’s my.fiu.edu page. For additional details, please see the Financial Assistance Section of the Frequently Asked Questions in FIU’s coronavirus page.

On and Off Campus Events

The cancelation or postponement of in-person university events – on and off campus – has been extended through July 1. When possible, events related to student success and otherwise central to the mission of the university, should continue to take place in a virtual environment.

Virtual Commencement

The spring class of 2020 will have a virtual commencement on May 8.

Graduates have until this Sunday, April 26 to register and personalize their profile. For more information, please visit the commencement website.

In addition to participating in the virtual commencement, every graduate will have the opportunity to walk in a traditional commencement ceremony later this year and/or have their official graduation photo taken with President Mark B. Rosenberg. More information will be provided at a later date.

Emotional Support Services

FIU continues to provide support to students, faculty, staff and their dependents. Students can reach out to Counseling and Psychological Services, 305-348-2277. Faculty and staff can contact the Office of Employee Assistance, 305-348-2469, or oea@fiu.edu.

Remote work

FIU leadership is working with local and state leaders to assess the situation locally and determine if remote work needs to be extended. The safety of the university community will be the top priority in determining when we can start a phased return to campus.

Have a safe and healthy summer and congratulations to the spring class of 2020!
