FIU to serve as an early voting site

October 14, 2020 at 11:56am

Once again, FIU is open for service as an early voting site. The polling site is at the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) Multipurpose Room at MMC.

Anyone registered to vote in Miami-Dade County – including FIU students, faculty and staff – can vote at this location. Vote-by-mail ballots will also be accepted at this site and may be dropped off in a secure Ballot Drop Box.

The Miami-Dade County Elections Department created a Health & Safety Fact Sheet outlining what poll workers are doing to ensure everyone’s good health – as well as what’s required of in-person voters – during this election season.

We asked Dr. Mary Jo Trepka, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology in the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, if she had anything to add to the Elections Department’s requirements, which include wearing a mask, practicing physical distancing and using hand sanitizer. She offered the following suggestions:

  • Go at times when you think fewer people will be there such as during the work day if you are able. (FIU poll workers said they’ve been experiencing an uptick in voters at the site between the hours of 8 to 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4 to 7 p.m.)
  • Vote prior to Nov. 3 if you are healthy. This avoids the risk of your being sick on election day and not being able to vote.

The polling site at FIU will be open daily through Sunday, Nov. 1, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Spaces will be reserved in Lot 3, east of the SASC Building, for voter parking. We recommend accessing the lot using the Southwest 107 Avenue and 16 Street campus entrance (please see map below.)

Anyone coming to campus, including voters, must wear a face covering and adhere to physical distancing guidelines.
