Panthers Protecting Panthers: Wear face coverings to keep everyone safer

May 15, 2020 at 4:40pm

As parts of South Florida begin to reopen, at FIU we are working on a plan to repopulate our campuses in phases, while keeping the health and safety of the university community as our top priority.

At the moment, the vast majority of the university community continues to learn and work remotely to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Summer classes are online and remote. Working remotely is expected to continue through May 30, 2020. No decisions have been made beyond that.

A limited number of employees and contractors are working on campus and 375 students are living in on-campus housing. The campus remains closed to visitors.

This is a reminder that anyone permitted on campus – faculty, staff, students, vendors – must observe social distancing and wear a face covering when there is a possibility of not being at least six feet away from another person, per Miami-Dade County Emergency Order 20-20. Furthermore, all individuals permitted on campus are required to wear a face covering when in the presence of others and in public settings such as hallways, restrooms and elevators. These measures are crucial to help prevent the spread of the virus. It is not necessary to wear a face covering when working alone in a lab or office.

Failure of vendors permitted on campus to wear a face covering or practice social distancing will result in their being asked to leave. Faculty, staff, and students who do not adhere to these requirements will be subject to appropriate discipline.

Please familiarize yourself with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines for the proper use of face coverings and their care and/or disposal

Just as important as wearing a face covering is refraining from touching your face at all times. One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease is frequent and thorough hand washing or the use of hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
