The MLK Breakfast Endowment, Barnes & Noble at FIU, and the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services invites undergraduate FIU students of all majors to apply for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Scholarship by submitting an original 500-word essay.

The essay must demonstrate students’ knowledge of the life, work and ideals of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and incorporate this year’s theme—“Unite for Equity: The Power of Collective Action.”

To be eligible, students must be Florida residents and have 75 credits or less.

The first-place recipient will be awarded $2,000, second place $1,500 and third place will be awarded $1,000 toward tuition, respectively. All essay contest winners will also receive a $500 book advance.

Essays must be submitted via Academicworks and will be reviewed by a subcommittee of individuals from the MLK Commemorative Celebration committee.

The committee is looking for creativity, structure and organization—in addition to how well students can incorporate personal experiences to the theme and reflect the ideals of MLK.

The winners are also invited to the Annual MLK Commemorative Celebration in January featuring prominent keynote speakers.

Applications are due Nov. 6.

Winners will be notified by Nov. 25.
