University to hold 'Safe Space: The Breonna Taylor Decision' Sept. 25

El pagnier K. Hudson—senior vice president of Human Resources and vice provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion—sent the following message to the FIU community on Sept. 24.

September 24, 2020 at 7:30pm

Dear FIU Community:

Another difficult blow has been rendered to many as a result of the outcome of the Breonna Taylor decision. Yes, the world is watching the events unfolding in our country, and many have not had time to heal. “The grand jury's decision means no one was criminally charged with killing Taylor, a 26-year-old Black emergency room technician and aspiring nurse,” as CNN reported.

We recognize the difficulties that many in our community may be experiencing while  processing this outcome. We are proud that our FIU community has always been at the forefront of peaceful engagement and education. Our work must be focused and intentional. We are stronger together and are fueled by the urgent need to  create additional space for support, understanding, and healing. Our collective efforts through the newly formed Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are just beginning. We must remain hopeful, be engaged, and empathize where opportunities to do so present themselves. As long as there is breath in our bodies, there is hope for a better tomorrow.

We are hosting a “Safe Space Dialogue” virtual event in collaboration with Counseling and Psychological Services and the Office of Employee Assistance, to allow for exchange and emotional support for those wishing to engage. The dialogue will be facilitated by Professor Phyllis Kotey, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Externships and Pro Bono Programs.

Please register early and join us at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.

Sincerely,

El pagnier K. Hudson, M.S.

Sr. Vice President, Human Resources

Vice Provost, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
