FIU to continue remote learning through end of spring semester

Update No. 18

March 17, 2020 at 4:57pm

  • FIU to continue remote learning through end of spring semester
  • One confirmed case in the university community

We hope you are adjusting to the new remote learning routine, as we do our part to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus in our community. As the number of cases continues to grow, it is more important than ever that we practice social distancing, stay informed and follow recommendations from experts to keep ourselves and our families healthy.

Today the Florida Board of Governors and the Chancellor of the State University System directed Florida public universities to extend remote learning through the end of the spring semester and look for alternate ways to celebrate the spring commencements. At FIU we are working on the specifics related to this mandate and will be announcing details in the coming days.

Please be aware that a member of the staff has tested positive for the coronavirus. Based on the history of the employee, it is likely a travel-related case and the employee has not been back to campus since returning from the trip. As such, there is no indication, thus far, that the FIU community has been exposed by this individual.

In an effort to continue supporting social distancing, and limiting gatherings, our campuses are open only to students, faculty and staff with urgent need to access study or work material, to a limited number of residents approved to stay in student housing and to those who are providing basic services to them. Otherwise, the campus is closed to all visitors.

On-campus housing residents will receive a separate communication from Housing and Residential Life outlining move-out procedures.

Please note that Comcast and AT&T are offering greater access to the Internet with free WiFi hotspots and service to homes that do not have connectivity.

It is important that each member of our university remains informed about university operations by visiting FIU’s coronavirus webpage. We are continuously updating the site with the latest decisions and resources.

The FIU Call Center will be open from 9 a.m. to  5 p.m. through Friday. If you have questions, please call 305-348-3481 during those hours.

As you are already aware, we extended the remote learning effort to the end of the spring 2020 term. We strongly encourage you to communicate with your professor if you have questions concerning the continuity of your coursework. To ensure that you experience as smooth a transition as possible, we are lifting temporarily the deadline to withdraw from the Spring Term (Sessions B and C) with a DR grade. During this time, we encourage you to discuss any potential changes to your spring enrollment with your advisor.

Once again, thank you for your cooperation and attention during this time. Please stay healthy and safe!
