Clubs and organizations to be overseen by one unified council

For years, the Council for Student Organizations (CSO) has been the governing body of more than 200 student organizations at the Modesto Maidique Campus. Similarly, the Student Organizations Council (SOC) has overseen the registration of clubs and distribution of funds every year at Biscayne Bay Campus.

But that division is about to change.

The leaders of CSO and SOC have agreed to become one unified council under the name of Registered Student Organization (RSO) Council. Together, they developed the new entity’s structure integrating policies and practices that will best serve current and future registered student organizations. RSO will be the new governing council effective this summer.

What does this mean for student organizations?

The merger is expected to streamline communication between FIU campuses and provide Panthers managing registered student organizations with clear information and a seamless experience.

“A unified council will help standardize processes and policies across all campuses so that student organization registrations, event planning and funding are uniform,” says Camila Mejia, president of the Student Organizations Council.  

Additionally, student organizations will now have the opportunity to take advantage of perks offered at both campuses including increased accessibility to function and recruit members across all FIU campuses. 

“Having one set of governing policies will increase collaborative engagement between student organizations,” says Nathalie Matas, president of the Council for Student Organizations.

What can students expect?

Kerrie Montgomery Orozco, director of Campus Life assures students will get the same level of support and consistent information about processes regardless of where the org is based: MMC, BBC, or EC.
