COVID-19 update: Face coverings, P3 app and travel

The following message was sent to the university community on March 10.

March 10, 2021 at 11:00am

For the past year, the FIU community has implemented risk mitigation measures to keep our students, faculty and staff healthy and safe while ensuring our university continues to operate with a focus on student success.

While the rollout of vaccines offers some reassurance, we must remain vigilant and continue to adhere to our Panthers Protecting Panthers plan. This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidance for people who are fully vaccinated. The CDC continues to recommend that everyone wear face coverings in public, as they are the most effective way to prevent further spread of the virus and to keep all of us safe.

Face coverings are required on campus

At FIU, everyone must wear a face covering while on campus. For those looking for an added layer of protection, you might consider double masking. Everyone must also continue to follow FIU’s other safety strategies, including maintaining physical distancing and washing hands often or using hand sanitizer.

P3 app

Also, before arriving on campus each day, every member of the university community must complete the P3 app questionnaire

If you do not complete the screening and are on the campus WiFi, you will receive a reminder notification via email. Please note that we have recently implemented random COVID-19 testing for the general safety of our Panther community. Individuals will be randomly selected based on participation in screenings through FIU’s P3 app. This program is designed to provide another level of confidence to our community by proactively detecting any potential risk of spread.

Travel and summer abroad programs

FIU recommends individuals refrain from traveling in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. However, if you do decide to travel, our FIU health experts recommend that you:

  1. Test for the SARS CoV-2 virus 1-3 days before your trip
  2. Wear a mask that covers your mouth and nose in all public places
  3. Avoid crowds and stay at least 6 feet from anyone not in your travel party
  4. Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer
  5. Test for the SARS CoV-2 virus upon your return and a week after you return

Additionally, if you are traveling internationally, we strongly recommend that you follow the CDC guidelines about testing and quarantining after you return.

FIU has canceled all in-person outbound international faculty-led, exchange and third-party programs for Summer 2021, including Summer B.

For more information about travel that is critical to our research preeminence and student success goals, please see guidelines on FIU’s repopulation website.
