Dr. Jorge Camilo Mora receives national geriatrics educator award

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has selected Dr. Jorge Camilo Mora as its 2021 American Geriatrics Society Outstanding Mid-Career Clinician Educator of the Year. 

Mora is an associate professor and director of geriatric medical education, strand leader for professional development, and director of clinical nutrition at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM).

“This is a great honor. This is the highest award for a clinician-educator in geriatrics in the country—and validates the geriatrics curriculum that I have developed at HWCOM,” Mora said. “Also, it recognizes the value of our community partners in supporting our curriculum: Leon Medical Centers, VA Medical Hospital, VITAS, Baptist Hospital, Aventura Hospital, Miami Jewish Home and Sanitas.”

The AGS is the leading body for education, health care, and policy advocating for older adults in the United States. The award recognizes someone who has made a significant contribution to the education and training of students/trainees in geriatrics and the progress of geriatrics education in health professions schools.

Mora is board certified in family medicine and geriatrics. He joined FIU HWCOM in 2009 as a founding faculty member. He previously worked at Broward Health Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

After graduating from medical school in Colombia, Mora received a Master of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and completed a mini-fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He pursued an early interest in HIV/AIDS research at the Harvard AIDS Institute, the François-Xavier Bagnoud International, and later at the University of Texas. In 2013, he completed a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Cleveland Clinic.
