FIU recognized with Simon Award for international education success

NAFSA, the world’s leading nonprofit association for international education, has awarded FIU the 2021 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization, recognizing its efforts in making international education part of the university experience.

The award distinguishes overall excellence in integrating international education throughout all facets of university and college campuses. FIU is one of five U.S. institutions to earn the award.

“We push our students to reach across the world to learn, teach, and collaborate so that they graduate as global citizens ready to make a difference,” said Pablo G. Ortiz, vice president for FIU Global. “We also host thousands of students and faculty from around the world each year, who share ideas and knowledge that result in sustainable solutions for our interconnected communities. These are just some of the things that put the “international” in FIU and make us a center for global learning.”

At the core of FIU’s international education success is the Global Learning for Global Citizenship initiative, an award-winning, national model that includes global learning course requirements for undergraduate students, high-impact global opportunities including internships and fellowships, scholarships for global engagement and research, and more. More than 150,000 of FIU’s students have benefitted from global learning courses taught by more than 1,100 faculty across all disciplines.

In the last five years, over
4,000 FIU students have gone abroad, either as part of an exchange program at a partner university or a faculty-led course. Over 200 of these faculty-led programs have been led by dozens of professors across various subjects to more than 50 countries. FIU was named among the top 21 U.S. doctoral institutions in 2020 and 2021 for producing the most Fulbright U.S. Scholars.

The late Senator Paul Simon, a strong advocate for international education and cross-cultural learning, is also the namesake of the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Program Act. The Simon bill aims to increase the number and diversity of students who complete a study abroad experience prior to graduation and make study abroad an integral part of higher education by offering competitive grants to U.S. higher education institutions.

Institutions selected for the Simon Awards will be featured in NAFSA's report, Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, to be published this fall, and honored during International Education Week in November.
