FIU will host in-person, physically distanced commencement ceremonies this spring

Dear members of the university community, 

Of the many changes to life at FIU over the past year, the cancelation of our traditional in-person commencements was among the most disappointing. That’s why I am excited to announce that this spring, our FIU will be hosting in-person, physically distanced commencement ceremonies.

Our spring graduates will join fellow classmates in outdoor ceremonies on Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25, at the Riccardo Silva Stadium at MMC. While ceremonies will be a scaled-back version of our traditional ceremonies to accommodate safety measures, they will be full of Panther spirit. Each graduate will receive tickets for three guests, who will see the graduate walk across the stage and turn their tassel.

And, of course, members of the Class of 2020 are welcome to participate. Last year’s graduates will receive a separate email with details on how to register.

Commencement caravans

One of the bright spots of 2020 was our commencement caravans, so we are keeping those and working them into our new celebration. Commencement caravans will take place on Tuesday, March 30, and Wednesday, March 31.

Graduates can show their Panther Pride by decking out their cars as they drive on campus. It’s also the only chance to pose for a photo with Roary and me on stage. There will be a car decorating competition, with prizes awarded to first, second and third place winners. This is also an opportunity to check out the outdoor Commencement Fair to purchase your cap and gown and other graduation gear.

Grad Walk

This Spring, for the first time, we will also host Grad Walk, which gives graduates an opportunity to take a photo on stage while wearing their regalia as two guests cheer them on. A date for Grad Walk will be announced soon. 

All commencement events will adhere to the Panthers Protecting Panthers plan to ensure everyone’s health and safety. This means everyone attending must wear a face covering, stay physically distanced and wash hands often or use hand sanitizer.

At FIU, our goal is to give our graduates a memorable Panther commencement experience. We hope our graduates enjoy their celebration, and I thank all those working tirelessly to make this happen for our hard-working students.
