Dear FIU family,

We join you in feeling outraged at the recent killings and other acts of violence against members of our nation’s Asian community. Pain and disgust are permeating our nation as a result of the mass murders of members of Atlanta’s Asian/Asian American community. Sadly, humanity has again been struck a debilitating blow at the hands of racist ideology and disrespect. We stand on the side of justice and accountability as we mourn together for these victims of hate.

As we try to make sense of the senseless, we are committing to amplify our message of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all whom we encounter. We are working on ways to bring attention to these crimes and discuss what we can do as a university community.

I would like to invite you to our upcoming virtual teach-in "I'm Not a Virus," sponsored by the Center for Humanities in an Urban Environment with the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Asian Studies program, on Tuesday, March 30, at 4 p.mActivist, comedian and actress Margaret Cho will join the teach-in. We’ll also learn from historian John Kuo Wei Tchen (Rutgers), social theorist Sean Metzger (UCLA), and a panel of activists, scholars, and artists about anti-Asian racism, its history, and what we should do about it.

Additionally, our Office of Social Justice and Inclusion, in partnership with Housing and Residential Life, will host a vigil today, March 19, at 2 p.m. on the Panther Hall lawn.

Our hope is that these events will offer significant ways to make a difference, to lend a hand, and to bring light to a dark situation.

Sincerely,

Mark B. Rosenberg

President
