Renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle to speak at FIU

Renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle is coming to FIU.

Earle is called “Her Deepness” by the  New Yorker, a Living Legend by the Library of Congress and was named the first Hero for the Planet by  Time magazine. She’s led hundreds of research expeditions, involving more than 7,000 hours under water and has written more than 175 scientific, popular publications and books. Today, Earle is president and founder of Mission Blue / The Sylvia Earle Alliance and has been a National Geographic Explorer in Residence since 1988. She was also the first female chief scientist for NOAA. Earle is also a member of the Explorers Club along with Mike Heithaus, executive dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, and Mireya Mayor, director of the college’s Exploration and Science Communication Initiative.

Earle continues to spread her message across the globe through lectures and documentaries, reminding people the continued decline in the health of our ocean is preventable, not inevitable.

Earle will share this message of hope as a part of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education’s Inaugural Explorers & Innovators Lecture Series at the Student Academic Success Center Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m.
